Jessie Ukpatauyaq Kenalogak (1951- )
Baker Lake, Nunavut
20078
27.5" x 32"
In 2007, the artist took a drawing course at the Matchbox Gallery in Rankin Inlet, and emerged from that having created a new personal style of art, in which droplets of colour form into groupings resembling schools of brightly coloured fish darting in different directions.
After producing a number of drawings in this new style, she has now created embroidered fabric wallhangings, this being only her third due to the amount of time it takes.
The result is fantastic, with various man/animal transformational creatures and drums/handles emerging from the electric foreground and negative spaces the longer one looks at the piece.
Very modern, very different, very unique and very collectible, even more so if you also purchase a drawing by her in this style (inquire if interested).
Kenalogak is the grand-daughter of the late Marion Tuu'luq and Luke Anguhadluq. Her work is included in the collection of the Prince of Wales Northern Heritage Centre in Yellowknife.
The embroidery stitches used in this piece include: feather, full and half blanket pinwheel, herringbone, chain, fly, stem, twist and long-armed feather.
