Proud of Her Beaded Amouti
[AE-45c]
$1,200.00

Joy Pamiuq Suluk (1952- )
Arviat, Nunavut
2009
17" x 28"

In this new piece, the artist says she was "trying out her beading." Wow is the only word we have for it: the beading is fantastic! The woman stands at attention facing the viewer, justifiably proud of her attire. The amouti has an incredible all-beadwork front panel with intricate deisgns and multiple colours of small seed beeds. A beaded fringe hangs from the bottom of the panel as well as from a beaded shoulder row which tops the panel and extends all the way to the bottom of both shoulders. More beads complete the bottom edge of the front amouti flap, anchoring the finely detailed leather fringe. The figure also sports a golden headband which tucks tight the woman's braids (done in 3D with black yarn in another nice touch), with yet more beads done in anchoring loops.

Edged all around in finely done shimmery white crossing stitch anchored with red, the navy blue stroud depicting the dark winter sky is a perfect background for the blue and green thread used to depict the northern lights, which glimmer magnificently. In her usual attention to detail, the artist has varied the stitch colours to show how the northern lights undulate and dance. While straightforward in its presentation, this is a truly masterful work in its details and authenticity.

Suluk has been sewing wallhangings for 30 years, a number of which have been bought by the Governor General of Canada to give as state gifts. She also produces award-winning quilts, one of which was bought by the Queen during her visit a few years ago. This multi-talented artist is an educator by trade, and a seamtress and poet in her spare time.

Embroidery stitches: stem, anchored cross, satin and buttonhole; as well as braided yarn and beadwork.

This wallhanging was added to our catalog on Friday 13 November, 2009.
