Joy Pamiuq Suluk (1952- )
Arviat, Nunavut
2009
20.5" x 29"
A beautiful and well balanced work, this piece features a very interesting inner border of polar bears which frame the scene. In the background, a mother polar bear approaches a seal while in the foreground, two younger bear siblings embrace, with one's chin resting on the other's back. Dancing overhead are northern lights, wonderfully depicted using different coloured threads.
Suluk has been sewing wallhangings for 30 years, a number of which have been bought by the Governor General of Canada to give as state gifts. She also produces award-winning quilts, one of which was bought by the Queen during her visit a few years ago. This multi-talented artist is an educator by trade, and a seamtress and poet in her spare time.
Embroidery stitches: seed, stem, satin, buttonhole and crochet border stitch.
