The very first Inuit wallhangings were completely sealskin, with inset pieces from other seal pelts.
With the creation of parkas and mitts from duffle, a different background material was available, and the Inuit artists mixed the old with the new by using sealskin appliqués on duffle.
The result, as seen in this piece, is that the light and dark sealskin appliqués contrast beautifully with the russet duffle background.
The embroidery stitches used in this piece include: buttonhole.
